David is CEO of The D-CYDE Group which brings together renowned business experts and strategists, leading-edge developers and designers, and social media and digital gurus from around the world who share the belief that smart, shared decisions drive business success.

We quickly realised that success was a combination of synthesising and presenting visual data and actively engaging multiple people from multiple disciplines in a standardised process. Only then would it be possible to arrive at a solution that could actually be implemented with true collaboration and commitment.

Tell us a little bit about your idea and what made you decide to take the plunge and make it happen?

We believe the impact of critical decisions can make all the difference between success and failure, profit and loss.

Daily, in boardrooms around the world, teams meet to make critical decisions that will shape the future of their departments, and ultimately, the profits and loss of their companies.  Yet the process of decision-making, which will determine organizational success, is extraordinarily subjective, inconsistent, and unreliable.  Major decisions are based on little more than long winded reports and short-term emotions.

While facilitating management consulting engagements with major companies and government agencies, we identified the challenge of getting senior management to quickly collaborate and align to an agreed upon solution with a high level of commitment.

When faced with making significant decisions, such as prioritising their strategic projects, picking the best supplier, or hiring the best person, it was always rife with strife! We quickly realised that success was a combination of synthesising and presenting visual data and actively engaging multiple people from multiple disciplines in a standardised process. Only then would it be possible to arrive at a solution that could actually be implemented with true collaboration and commitment.

The challenge could only effectively be addressed if we employed smart technology using a comprehensive process that actively engaged the contributors and decision makers. Research showed there was a strong need for a practical solution and no practical product was available in the market. We also identified there were new technology tools that could make our product possible so we took the plunge.

Working for 18 months with an international team of UX designers, Microsoft MVP programmers of specialised developers, psychologists, business and communications experts, we created D-CYDE Decisions, a complex series of unique business applications.

D-CYDE helps companies make better, smarter, collaborative business decisions and increases your company alignment, measurability and ROI. Drive success through better, smarter planning team decisions for business strategies, priorities, projects and opportunities.

Business success is determined by the decisions you make. D-CYDE is the revolutionary new business decision tool that is driving superior business results. This innovative, solid and engaging decision-making process substantially raises active participation, productivity and profitability. It significantly improves stakeholder clarity, confidence and commitment to your company decisions.

Please explain your business model

We provide a free version of the software in the Windows application store for users to experience the complete set of features of the software. Monthly subscriptions then offer the opportunity to increase the number of decisions and contributors that you wish to invite.

Consumer business retailers are finding that offering their customized white label version provides an excellent sales tool and lead-generator to engage their customers in the buying of their products, as they are able to assess their social networks and expand their markets by promoting to their very influential social groups. Users of D-CYDE invite their social networks into their decision-making process, using the power of social networks in a completely new way to do the selling for them.

What are you working on right now and what are you most excited about in the next three months?

We are currently working on a full web version of the product and this means that absolutely everyone will be able to participate in the decision making process from any device.

We regularly attend the Manly Entrepreneurs and Tech Beach Meetups.

How do you make ideas happen?

Making ideas happen is often a collaborative process starting with scribbles on a piece of paper. We then actively engage our diverse team of experts in late night Skype meetings, and find that the idea morphs into something better, practical and implementable. I also find walking on the beach or waking up in the middle of the night gives me new insight to a problem that I have been working with during the day.

What does your typical day look like?

They are very long days, with weekends and public holidays currently looking like just another working day! The typical day starts early with a few hours working on emails in my favourite Manly café, sales meetings at client offices, marketing activities back in the home office and late night Skype meetings with our European team… usually followed by documenting immediate actions so that they can continue to work while we sleep.

What challenges have you faced when starting or growing a business/organisation in Australia?

We spent a lot of time working the JV and government pitch circuit only to find that the process was long, money was very tight and primarily only available for more established companies. We finally abandoned the idea as we became more established ourselves. Now they are showing interest but want too much control without having to take the risks that we have just overcome.

What is one idea you are willing to give away for free?

Free versions of our app can be downloaded from the Windows store. For a complex consumer decisions like which car to buy, where to go to school, where to move to, holiday, investments, wedding planning and more – download the consumer Better Decisions app.

Name 3 websites you would recommend to our readers.

The most critical applications that we run our business on are Skype, Trello, Snagit and Office 365.

Are there opportunities for people to get involved with your idea (e.g. are you looking for funding, interns, marketing help)?

Yes. The opportunities and available niches for our product are very extensive and we will never have enough resources or time to effectively service them all. So we are looking for product sales partners and marketing interns to help get to as many markets as soon as possible. We’re open to ideas!

What’s your favourite bar/café/restaurant?

My morning coffee office is the Market Lane Café in Manly.

We thought it would be cool to crowdsource an annual prize to award to the interviewee’s choice (each person interviewed gets one vote) winner for the year’s best interview. Are you willing to kick in a prize?

We would be willing to offer our D-CYDE Decisions product to the judges to assist in making many of the decisions required for a fair contest or award process.

Make a good decision. Sign up to our monthly email.
